Tim Walz gone, but an early exit from his re-election campaign presents its own challenges. State and national Republicans — including President Donald Trump — hammered Walz over a series of fraud scandals in Minnesota’s welfare programs they correctly identified would be a serious political liability for the two-term governor.

During his time as governor, Walz notched several progressive victories, including signing a $2.3 billion education budget — the biggest in Minnesota’s history — funding expanded free meals for students, thousands of new pre-K seats, and increased mental health resources in schools.

Republican U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville has filed paperwork to run for governor. Tuberville announced last year that he would not seek reelection for the Senate seat he won in 2020.
