Sprague is leaving after one year as CEO at the PGA of America, wishing to return to upstate New York to help support his mother and mother-in-law who are requiring more care.

After just over a year on the job, the PGA of America’s CEO has resigned. In a surprise announcement Tuesday, Derek Sprague will step down as head of the organization, a move Sprague says is to return to New York in support of his family. Sprague informed the PGA of America of his intentions in December.

Sprague came under fire at the Ryder Cup for not immediately reacting after Rory McIlroy and other golfers were verbally abused.

Derek Sprague was the first former PGA of America president to take over the CEO role when he was hired last January.
